Remembering Georgina “Gina” Griffin

1961-2026

Gina Griffin was one of a kind: sharp as a whip, wickedly funny, and always up for a little mischief. The glimmer in her eye told you something memorable was about to happen – and that you were lucky to be part of it.

For decades, Gina was an essential part of the ATP family. She served on our Board, joined us for countless openings and events, made our annual trips to Stratford, and supported artists and arts organizations across Calgary. Her love of theatre ran deep, but what mattered most to her were the people who brought it to life.

We’ll never forget the day Gina and Doug came into the office with another one of their infamous spicy chocolate tortes. The last time I’d visited their home, they’d sent me back with a piece for Peita to try. Unfortunately, it never made it to Peita. I ate it. I suspect Gina and Doug decided the next one was best delivered in person! Doug was the baker between the two, of course, while Gina made sure the rest of us got to enjoy the results. She watched with delight as we devoured every spicy bite. That was Gina: generous, thoughtful, fiercely loyal, and always ready for a laugh.

She had strong opinions, a big heart, and an unwavering commitment to the people and things she believed in. We loved her for all of it.

To Doug and the entire family, our hearts are with you. Thank you for sharing Gina with us for so many years. We know how much she meant to you, and we hope you know just how much she meant to all of us.

We’ll celebrate Gina with our ATP family in the coming months. But in the meantime, I have one request.
The next time you’re at the theatre, clap a little louder and laugh a little harder. Make a little extra noise for Gina. She would have loved that.

On behalf of the Board, staff, and all the artists and creators at Alberta Theatre Projects, thank you, Gina, for reminding us why we do this work. You made our theatre a better place simply by being part of it.
