“I don’t like theatre.”

SAY WHAT?!

We get it. Theatre and performing arts can seem intimidating. But too often, “I don’t like theatre” means “I’ve never attended live theatre.” Read on for some of the biggest misconceptions about live theatre and what we have to say!

“I’m worried I won’t fit in.”

There is no dress code at Alberta Theatre Projects, or at most performing arts companies in Calgary. Our shows are just as great in jeans or a ball gown. We have patrons from all walks of life as young as 5, and as old as 95! Come as you are and enjoy the show!

“Theatre is boring, uptight, and high-minded.”

Our newest season features a racy, high-stakes thriller about the political and sexual scandal that set the stage for Elizabeth I to become The Virgin Queen, a Tony Award-winning black comedy by the Academy Award-winning writer of Shakespeare in Love, a swashbuckling, adventure-filled family comedy about the iconic outlaw Zorro, a sweetly moving Canadian success story, and a darkly funny mystery about a girl’s scouting troupe who to the online survivalist movement. If you like House of Cards, Fargo, The Legend of Zorro, Lady Bird, or Strangers Things, we think you’ll love what we have planned for our 2018/19 season. Plus, every show run includes a Pizza and Beer NightAfternoon Tea, and catered Opening Night event. If you’re asking us, this sounds anything but boring!

If you have any questions about our upcoming performances or anything ATP-related, our ticket office is always thrilled to hear from you! Give us a call Monday to Friday between 9:30AM and 5PM at 403-294-7402.

“Live theatre is too expensive.”

With our all-new Pay What You Can Preview Tuesdays, you can attend theatre and choose your price. If you’re a student, you can see every performance in our season for just $10 a show! Read more about the ways you can save on the shows you want here.

“I’m too busy to plan ahead. I like to be spontaneous!”

Many people don’t realize that watching a theatre performance is no different than, say, catching the latest Avengers movie. You can check out our schedule online 24/7, and there’s almost always at least a few tickets available for purchase online or right at our theatre box office (located directly to the right of the Martha Cohen Theatre entrance) up to one hour prior to the performance start!
